A WOMAN went on a terrifying rampage with a steak knife after a stranger "looked at her funny" outside a corner shop.

Carla Couperthwaite, 22, spent five minutes trying to get into the Greater Manchester store - with witnesses claiming she was "frothing at the mouth".

Bolton Crown Court heard the young man was seen fleeing Couperthwaite, running across the road to barricade himself into the store as she unleashed the "frightening and ferocious" attack.

Her lawyer Nicholas Ross told the court she had felt the man in question "had been looking at her on a number of occasions in a manner she felt was troubling."

But he added: "What she did then however has absolutely no excuse. She is ashamed by her conduct."

CCTV captured the attack, which unfolded on February 4, showing drunk Couperthwaite trying to get into the convenience store before then turning on a second man as he walked past.

She appeared to berate the man as she kicked him.

Cops were called to the scene, later tracking the young woman down at her mother's home nearby.

Couperthwaite who has previous convictions for violence later admitted she had been drinking heavily.

Judge Timothy Stead jailed the 22-year-old for 16 months after she pleaded guilty to affray and possessing a bladed article in a public place.

He said knife crime in the UK was a "concerning national issue", adding: "'The current climate amounts to it being mentioned every time you turn on the television news. The knife which features in this case was brought to court and I actually have it in my chambers. It appears to be a steak knife with a serrated blade."

He said the knife was blunted at the end - showing how forcefully she had stabbed at the door as she "frothed at the mouth" and was "completely out of control".

Slamming the young woman, the judge told her: "You are 22-years-old and you have a lengthy record of offences for somebody your age.

"Heavy drinking and intoxication seem to be a big part of your life and it featured in this offence."

The second man involved in the attack has not been identified.
