Joseph Kahoʻoluhi Nāwahī, also known as the Hawaii Iosepa Kahoʻoluhi Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu, was a nationalist leader, lawmaker, lawyer, newspaper publisher, and Hawaiian painter. Thanks to his long political service during the monarchy and the key roles he played in the resistance and against its overthrow, Nāwahī is considered an influential Hawaiian patriot. Born on the island of Hawaii, Nāwahī was formally educated in Protestant mission schools on the island. He started his career as a teacher at Hilo Boarding School and later became a self-taught lawyer. He was also a successful artist and one of the few native Hawaiian painters working in Western styles in the 19th century. Joined politics in 1872 as a member of the House of Representatives. represented his hometown of Puna and then Hilo in the Legislative Assembly of the Kingdom of Hawaii for two decades.
