Conan O'Brien's tax snafu was nothing but a simple mail mix-up. The L.A.-based comedian made headlines on Monday, June 23, for paying $8,000 in back taxes on his family's Westerly, R.I., home just before it went to auction, but O'Brien himself tells Us Weekly he'd have paid sooner if he'd known any money was owed. 

"As soon as I was made aware that the tax bill on my parents' house was being mailed to the wrong address, I paid the bill immediately," the late-night host says. "The problem has been corrected. I am grateful to the reporter at the Westerly Sun who spotted this error and notified me."

A source adds that the TBS star's accounting firm is in L.A., and that he received no notice of the bill. "As soon as he was made aware, he paid the bill in full," the insider tells Us.

According to property records obtained by the Associated Press, the house in question is listed in O'Brien's parents' name and located near the Westerly Shore in Rhode Island. Valued at about $723,000, it was among several set to be auctioned on Tuesday, June 24, because of delinquent tax bills.

O'Brien, 51, paid the outstanding $8,000 on the home on Friday, June 21, officials told the Westerly Sun. The property was subsequently removed from auction.
